The Chattooga County Historical Society was founded in 1987 and is today comprised of almost 300 families both within and outside Chattooga County. Our Mission is to advance the understanding, appreciation, preservation, protection and sharing of the historical resources of Chattooga County-including but not limited to documentary, photographic, structural, oral and ephemeral history .
The Historical Society has been pleased to be entrusted with the preservation of several collections of old photos, histories, business ledgers and church records. While many of the records are fragile, we hope to scan them and make them available to the public over the next few years.We recently received an 1858 church bell which we plan to exhibit. Please contact us if you have historical items or photos you would like to add to our collection–originals or copies are welcome.
Many of these collections are secured in the Georgia Room of the Chattooga County Library in Summerville. Our organization is delighted to sponsor the Friends of the Georgia Room Committee and we are gratified by monetary contributions and gifts of pertinent books to enrich that collection.
We publish a quarterly journal focusing on our Chattooga County Heritage. The organization sponsors numerous worthwhile, successful activities. Among those are the Robert S. Baker History Awards and Banquet, the Historic Sites Art Contest for middle and high school students, distribution of Chattooga historical timelines to all students in the county, walking tours, historical exhibits at the County Fair and an annual Old Fashioned Singing at the courthouse.
